Freaky: iPhone 5s Keeps On Tracking Your Movements Even If The Battery Is Dead

The iPhone 5s, as is often the case with new iPhone releases, brought with it a bunch of new and exciting features, including Touch ID, gold color configuration, and a 64-bit processor – the first to be found within a smartphone. Allied to the new A7 SoC was the M7 motion coprocessor, and not only did this pave the way for more advanced fitness and motion-related apps, but took the strain off the standard CPU while also conserving battery. But the M7 coprocessor may be even more powerful than we first imagined, with one Redittor having discovered that it tracked his movements for days, despite the device seemingly dead through lack of power.
Of course, when a device is switched off, we expect zero functionality to be taking place whatsoever. A blank screen is, as far as most of us are aware, indicative of a device taking a rain-check from all digital activities, but in the case of one man’s iPhone 5s, not so.
Reddit user Glarznak was out travelling when the unthinkable happened – his charging cable broke. Instead of seeking a new connector, though, he decided to throw his device into his bag, and continue on his merry way.
Only, upon his return, he noticed that Argus – a third-party step-counting app for benefit of the uninitiated – had continued to log steps during the four days in which the device was supposedly dead.
Sure, it’s generally accepted that batteries never “truly” die and conserve a minute amount of power, hence why, when your device’s battery has conked out, you can often still power it on for ten or so seconds before it gives up again.
But the fact that there was enough juice left to keep the M7 motion coprocessor counting steps for four whole days is a tad creepy / disconcerting to say the least, as if the device is continuing to watch and monitor your movements even when you presume it to be comatose.
I suppose, if nothing else, the story does underline the power efficiency of the M7, and although we might have gotten a bit carried away with some of the iPhone 5s’s more showy features, that the motion coprocessor is among the more significant, useful hardware implementations made my Apple.

Apple Hiring Engineers and Supply Chain Managers in Asia to Speed Up Production

Apple is hiring engineers and supply chain managers for its operations in Asia as its seeks to expand and quicken the production of new and existing products, reports the Wall Street Journal. These new teams will work out of the company's main Asian campus in Shanghai, China and its office in Taipei, Taiwan.

The report states that the company is hiring engineers away from HTC, Inventec and other Taiwanese tech firms to build an engineering team in Taipei. These new hires will quicken the pace of production by working closely with Apple's Asian suppliers on hardware components for the iPhone and iPad. They also will oversee software quality assurance.
Apple has added several hundred new engineers and operations staff in China over the past two years, with a blitz of hiring that began in mid-2013, people familiar with the matter said. The total number of engineers and operations staff in China now exceeds 600, they said.
Apple also is adding supply chain managers to its Asian staff in response to ongoing criticism of working conditions in select supplier factories.

Apple's new operations in Asia may help combat supply constraints that have plagued recent product launches. The company admitted during its Q1 2013 earnings conference call that production issues limited the supply of the iMac during the holiday shopping season. More recently, Apple warned of low Retina iPad mini inventory prior to the tablet's launch in late 2013.

Innovation is never far away when the jailbreak community is concerned, but as we’ve mentioned multiple times in the past, there is always going to be a selection of "must have" packages that we hope will continue to get updated with each iteration of iOS. One of those tweaks is IntelliScreenX 7, which we are excited to announce is now available in all of its’ beautiful iOS 7 glory.

The package achieves this by offering immediate access to pretty much anything on the device that matters directly from the lock screen. Messages, weather information, calendar entries, emails, miscellaneous RSS feeds, IntelliScreenX has it all covered, and it looks beautiful too.

Our first look at IntelliScreenX 7 gave a glimpse of what users could expect from this launch. It becomes understandable that the package has taken so long to be updated when you actually see and interact with the finished product. The engineers on the Intelliborn team appear to have gone above and beyond with the product by bundling in a heap more power and functionality that includes immediate access to social accounts and connected feeds like Twitter and Facebook.
Regular users of IntelliScreenX will be blown away by the power and versatility of this latest offering. The additional features, including the marvelous slide functionality that we wrote about, makes the update more than worthy and manages to confirm IntelliScreenX’s dominance as one of the most professional and powerful extensions available for jailbroken devices.

The latest version of the package, IntelliScreenX 7, is available to download or purchase as a “BETA” now from the ModMyi repository for $9.99 as a new offering for devices running iOS 7 or above. Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer joins Goldman Sachs Board of Directors

Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer has joined the Board of Directors of investment banking firm Goldman Sachs. Oppenheimer is an independent director for the company, and this has no effect on his current leadership position at Apple.
“Peter’s 25 years of broad experience across important industries will add a valuable perspective to our Board of Directors,” said Lloyd C. Blankfein, Chairman and CEO.  “We appreciate his willingness to serve as a director and look forward to benefitting from his judgment and counsel.”
As an experienced CFO, Oppenheimer’s financial aptitude will likely be beneficial for the investment behemoth. “Oppenheimer will be a member of each of the firm’s Audit, Risk, Compensation and Corporate Governance, Nominating and Public Responsibilities committees,” according to Goldman Sachs…

Other top Apple executives serve on the Boards for other firms. Apple CEO Tim Cook still sits on Nike’s Board, while Apple Senior VP of Internet Software and ServicesEddy Cue is a member of car company Ferrari’s Board of Directors. A profile of Steve Jobs indicated that the Apple co-founder was against his senior leadership sitting on the Boards of other firms.

Apple Stores discounting Apple TV w/ $25 iTunes card ahead of new hardware rumored for spring

Update: Apple has confirmed the promo, and according to the T&C online orders are also eligible.
According to our sources, Apple retail employees were informed this morning that beginning today, anyone who purchases an Apple TV from Apple will receive a free $25 iTunes gift card. As of right now this promotion seems to only be available at brick and mortar locations, but we will update this post if it pops up at the Apple online store. The promotion is scheduled to end on March 5th. iTunes gift cards can be used to download movies, music, apps, and more.
Here’s what we know so far about the incoming next-generation Apple TV hardware:

Back in January we reported that Apple was testing the new Apple TV hardware that could include a revamped operating system and possibly app and game support for sometime in the first half of 2014. We also reported that Apple was working on new hardware that included a built-in AirPort Express 802.11ac router and others with built-in TV tuner functionality to control existing cable boxes. Most recently we reported that code in recent builds of iOS 7 point to refreshed hardware, at least internally. Bloomberg followed up by confirming a couple of the same details including a new interface for navigating content. It also said the hardware will include a faster processor and get an introduction in April ahead of a Christmas launch. Despite Apple adding a ton of new content in recent months, the most recent reports originating from The Wall Street Journal claimed Apple’s plans could get scaled back as it continues to negotiate with content providers and cable companies.
In the past few weeks 9to5Toys has featured several deals for as low as $84 new, and $62 open-box.

Evasi0n7 1.0.7 released with fix for bundled package list issue in Cydia

The evad3rs have released an update to their evasi0n7 jailbreak tool this afternoon. The update, which brings the tool to version 1.0.7, includes a fix for a known issue where the bundled package lists could not be updated by Cydia.
This is more of a maintenance update, as it doesn’t really add new features or benefits for people who aren’t experiencing the above problem. So unless you are seeing the issue, there’s no reason for you to restore and re-jailbreak…
As always, this version of evasi0n7 is compatible with any device running iOS 7. You can download evasi0n7 1.0.7 from our Downloads page we have a Mac tutorial and Windows guide available for those that need helping with the process.
